| SHARPENING THE SAW
One day a man was walking to work. He saw his friend trying to saw down a tree. When the man returned from work he saw his friend again, now completely exhausted still going at it. The first man stopped and told his friend, "Hey my friend, why don't you stop and sharpen your saw?" The friend replied, "I don't have time. I'm trying to saw the tree down."
Many of you might have heard this story before. It's quite famous and Stephen Covey, author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, shares about it in detail in Habit #7.
What I have learned from this story is this: when I try to do something without preparing I end up wasting time, energy and my mood, food habits and life seem unmanageable.
This story was one of my inspirations to start a daily morning ritual.
My non violent communication (NVC) teacher calls it self presencing or checking the compass. When we wake up in the morning who knows what our mind is saying, what our body feels like, or where our habits will lead us. (We have been in a deep discussion about this on our FWH Client Yahoo Group).
When we take a few minutes in the morning to sharpen our saw or place the compass in the direction WE want to be headed we are practically guaranteed to stay on our (health) path.
I know what you are thinking.
"Darshana I don't have time in the morning!"
I'm going to challenge you…….REALLY?
Do you really not have time? 2, 3, 5 minutes to set your compass straight and sharpen your saw.
When we sharpen ourselves each morning we will end up being more productive, make healthier choices and be available to connect to ourselves and others more deeply.
I know you KNOW THIS, now I'm inviting you to PRACTICE IT.
I have done numerous experiments with this. Mornings that I take time and sharpen my saw (meaning my mind, body & sprit) I am 100x's more productive. I end up signing up new clients, feel more connected to my husband, stay calmer when stress arises (and it does) and feel way more balanced. As a result of feeling balanced ya know what happens? I make great food choices.
When I say experiments I mean it. The days I don't do this…well, I'm just cranky, more impulsive and agitated inside.
The key is to train yourself. I am not like this by nature. Leave me to my own deceiving impulses and you know where you will find me? In the chocolate fudge brownie ice cream or not exercising.
So you might be wondering what this has to do with my spending time alone. As I said above in the past when I spent lots of time alone I would have felt scared, lonely and made a straight B-line towards binge foods for comfort.
Knowing this about myself I know that being alone is a sensitive time. Old habits and old thoughts could overwhelm me.
Instead of falling into those old patterns I knew it was time to sharpen my saw even more. During this time I pulled out some old favorite sharpen my saw "ritual" practices and made sure I didn't miss a day.
HERE'S MY INVITATION
Are you willing to take a few minutes out each morning to sharpen your saw?
If you're not- no problem. First thing is PLEASE don't beat up on yourself.
Instead be kind to yourself. You might not be ready. Just stay with the question, watch the resistance and see what happens if you stay with the NO.
If you ARE READY to sharpen your saw I want to share a few practices I use to help support you.
1. Read inspiring books. Have them everywhere. I keep inspiring books on my night stand, in the kitchen, on my desk, in the bathroom and in my back pack. Here are a few I am reading these days.
The Power of Now by Eckert Tolle. I keep the audio version on my IPod.
Thousand Name for Joy by Byran Katie. This is my favorite of the moment.
Don't be Nice, Be Real by Kelly Bryson. This is my NVC teacher.
Non Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg. Also on my IPod.
Yoga and the Quest for the True Self by Stephen Cope.
Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness, by Eric Schiffmann.
2. Other books I have used in the past
When Food is Love By Geneen Roth
Illusions By Richard Bach
The Way of the Peaceful Warrior By Dan Millman (a movie too)
Trusting You are Love By Lew Epstein
When Things Fall Apart By Prem Chodran
Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic by Darren John Main
Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom by Christine Northrup
3. Journal- specifically write 10 things you are grateful for
4. Listen to inspiring songs (yeah, I love all the spiritual music but really I'm a rock and roll girl. Pop out the old records and dance around your room)
5. Tarot cards. Pull one each day for inspiration. I am a big fan of the OSHO deck.
6. Yup you guessed it- Traditional style, yoga and meditation
Here's another thing to consider. I wish I was one of those people who could do the same thing every morning but I'm not. I NEED variety. Personally I think most people do. Have a list of options. Call it the sharpen my saw list or direct my compass list.
Whatever you want to call it is great…the main thing is DO IT!
If you are having trouble staying in a healthy mindset and believing you CAN make a change please know you're not the only one. I was there too.
