Earlier on in my adventure of natural healing I decided to give up taking Advil when I got my period. Instead, I was committed to listening more deeply to the conversation my body was having with me. I had to think about it for awhile but I figured these cramps were probably a cry for attention so why wasn't I listening? I trained myself to be with the sensations of the body and give it what it was asking for.
Over the next few months I came to realize that there was a pattern. As the pattern unfolded I saw that it was pretty regular and had a schedule. I knew how many days before I would start to bleed, that the cramps and cravings would happen. I learned that day 1 of my period was different than day 3 or day 5 and the pain seemed to be located in the same place in my body each month.
Finally the monthly mystery wasn't such a mystery anymore. I had learned a bit more about what the body was trying to tell me.
So what did I do? I started to plan ahead. I changed some of my food to accommodate the cravings, I always scheduled massages ahead of time, so I would get mindful touch and healing on my body and I planned my teaching schedule and social life differently so that I would have more down time to be with my body and give it what it needed instead of being on a schedule and then telling my body: "Deal with it, this is the plan."
As a result I became more relaxed and my body started to soften, shift and heal.
Now you might be thinking, I don't have that much time…or patience. I didn't think I did either but it was important to develop my relationship to my body. It is the most intimate relationship I will have in this lifetime. Doesn't it deserve the attention? I'm willing to work on my relationship with my husband, parents, friends and co-workers... what about ME,my body!
Clients sometimes say to me: "I just want to be normal, eat what I want and have my body work." After 13 years of working with women and their health I have to put the question back onto you: "What is normal?" The women in my life, whether clients or friends, are all asking the same questions. Instead of consistently negating our experience because we want to be normal (whether it's with food cravings, food choices, physical ailments, energy…) perhaps we can embrace the process and re-direct that focus INSIDE, listen and ask your body, "What are you trying to say to me?"
This week's invitation – which will last a month, is to track your cycles.
Before we can hear what the body needs we want to pay attention to its subtle or not so subtle cues. I have included a worksheet that I use with my clients in the FRUITION WOMEN'S HEALTH program, to help you do this. At the end of the month we will see what you came up with.
