Message From Katie

Dear Friend

If you have ever dieted, or thought that you should, you will find this month’s feature article about 'detox diets' very interesting. After over 40 years of trying to diet, I can write from personal experience that diets don’t work; that is 'diets' of any kind. If you are overweight, or feeling uncomfortable in your current size, consider a non-diet approach to weight management, as in Intuitive Eating.

Since Intuitive Eating is a lifestyle change, it does take time. But with the help of a coach, you will find yourself staying motivated and excited about the changes you will make. Furthermore, as the fall is fast approaching, it is not too soon to start to think about your holiday clothes. Why not try something new? You will be so happy that you did.

Best of health,
Katie Katz

Detox Diets:
A Healthy Habit
or Phony Promises?

Natalie Digate Muth, M.P.H., R.D. exposes detox diets in a recent article in a journal published by the American Council on Exercise. Detoxification, or "detox" diets, aim to purge the body of harmful 21st Century toxins such as pollutants, pesticides, food allergies and other synthetic compounds to achieve a state of bodily purification.

Most eliminate nicotine and alcohol, and many restrict meat and solid foods altogether. They also tend to involve consumption of large amounts of liquid, fiber and raw vegetables—ingredients that are thought to purge the gastrointestinal system of accumulated harmful substances. A variety of cleansing boosters may be incorporated into a detox regimen such as herbal laxatives, colonics (aka enema—a flushing out of the rectum and colon with water), probiotics to repopulate the natural intestinal flora, and antioxidants.

Are They Dangerous?
Many components of detoxification programs are potentially dangerous. While consuming a lot of fiber and staying well-hydrated are healthy when done in moderation, colonics and laxatives intended to "purify" the digestive tract are dangerous. Their use can lead to metabolic disturbances, fainting episodes, dehydration, and muscle cramps, among other complications. Colonics are also potentially dangerous due to increased risk of infection or perforation of the bowel from the introduction of a foreign object into the rectum. Further, detoxification diets are especially problematic for individuals with underlying medical conditions such as heart disease or arrhythmias, diabetes or eating disorders, and those who are frail, elderly, pregnant or nursing. The more extreme programs also leave individuals protein and nutrient depleted.

Do They Work?
While experts agree that the body's natural mechanism for removing waste is more than adequate to rid the body of toxins, suppose that toxins could accumulate. Even then, detox diets may not be all that effective. Toxicologist A. Jay Gandolfi, an associate dean for research in the college of pharmacy at the University of Arizona, along with other researchers, made the following points to the Los Angeles Times last fall:

  1. high volumes of liquid consumption could theoretically help remove water soluble chemicals like arsenic, but not fat-soluble solubles which make up most pollutants;

  2. fiber consumption may help to eliminate toxic chemicals that accumulate in the liver, but not chemicals that are located in other parts of the gastrointestinal system;

  3. raw vegetables have no special detoxifying properties other than that their high-fiber content can further help to build up stools;

  4. most chemicals of concern are fat soluble, which means that they are stored in fat. The best way to get rid of these potential toxins is not through a detox diet, but through weight loss, as more slender people get rid of toxins more quickly than overweight and obese individuals.

Bottom line, benefits may exist, but they likely are not due to detoxification. "Decreased bloating is from eating less food; clearer skin results from increased hydration; and decreased headaches are elimination of caffeine and alcohol", says Dr. Peter Pressman, an endocrinologist at the private medical firm Geller, Rudnick, Bush and Bemberger, in an editorial in the journal Food Technology. "Our lungs, kidneys, liver gastrointestinal tract and immune system are effective in removing or neutralizing toxic substances within hours of consumption."

It all goes back to eating well balanced meals rich in complex carbohydrates, high in fiber, lots of water and get plenty of exercise. Alternative Medicine Guru Andrew takes it one step further, "The best thing you can do is to stop putting toxins in your system. Eat organic foods, drink water that is purified, and don't be around second hand smoke-the obvious things."

Abdominal Crunch-Up

Skill: Intermediate

Intermediate exercises may be longer, more complex and/or more straining than a beginner exercise. Intermediate exercises challenge strength, control, balance, flexibility & power. Gain experience, mobility & strength with beginner exercises before moving on to intermediate programs.

Equipment:

• medicine ball
• stability ball

The abdominal crunch-up with the medicine ball is an intermediate core exercise that really hits the midsection hard. You must have good lower back strength in order to perform this exercise properly. The stronger your core is in stabilizing your entire body, the more effective you will be in performing all your fitness activities and reducing injuries!

STEP 1

Start with you back pressed firmly against the mat, the stability ball between your feet and a medicine ball of appropriate weight in your hands.

STEP 2

Lift your legs up using your lower abs while crunching up with the medicine ball by contracting your upper abs. Meet and touch at the top and lower yourself back down.

STEP 3

Open your body back up, lower yourself back down to the starting position and repeat action.

A Fitness By Phone® Success Story…

"But I'm Working So Hard!"

I can't remember a period in my adult life when I haven't engaged in exercise weekly. For the past two years, I've combined weight lifting with several weekly sessions of strenuous hiking carrying a 25-pound backpack, usually about 2 hours each outing. My goal was to be able to continue enjoying hiking and backpacking with my hus-band and grandchildren. Yet it seemed with each passing year, my stamina had decreased and my balance was worse. None of this helped me on the trail. The decreased confidence in my ability prompted me to do two things. One, I just worked harder and harder thinking more time was the solution. Secondly, I sought out a professional, who might offer some fresh ideas.

Fitness By Phone® has been the answer. There were quite a few surprises to my conventional way of thinking. By gearing a program to my specific needs, my Fitness by Phone® Coach has shown me that working harder isn't necessarily the answer. Working smarter is the solution. By mixing up routines, I've psyched out my body, so it has to work harder, not me. My stamina has increased to the point I can now run 3+ miles a day. I just celebrated my 64 th birthday and haven't run in 25 years. On a recent hiking adventure in Utah, I was able to climb up and down rock obstacles in a variety of slot canyons and do it with confidence.

My favorite part of Fitness By Phone® is, I don't have to travel to a gym to gain the benefits of working with a fitness professional. I live a good 30 minutes from any facility, so I appreciate being able to save the drive time to use on other activities. My Fitness By Phone® Coach has been great about offering interesting, yet challenging routines using equipment I already own. We travel between homes and family a great deal. As long as I have my cell phone, my Coach and I can touch base. This freedom is worth a lot. It keeps my life simple and manageable. I would recommend Fitness By Phone® to anyone wanting to kick-start their life.
